Eskimo Vet's Rating:
I got this as a gift for my boyfriend who is a map junkie. He loves topo maps and never goes anywhere in the car without a regular map. So far, he is loving it. The manual that comes with it is not user friendly and he has had to play with it a lot to become familiar with it but the more he uses it, the more he likes it. The descriptions would have been more helpful had they said that without extra maps (purchased separately), it is almost a useless device. I was under the impression that the basic map data it came with was adequate starter stuff and that very much was not the case. Also, the manual needs to be re-written so one doesn’t have to stumble thru the process with so much frustration. However, now that he has a lot more experience, he loves it - even for navigating in the car, which surprised me. He likes it better than other automotive designed GPS.

Been using the Garmin 60CSx for about a month. I purchased the unit mainly for road biking and hiking. I am very pleased with the performance, no dead zones and appears to be very accurate. I have done a little geocaching and the unit was dead on. Altitude is off 10-15 feet from one hike to the next at the same spot, but I think that is the margin of accuracy in the specs. I have the North American NT Map Totally loaded on a 2GB card. I am also using in my truck for highway navigation and it works good for that as well even with the small screen. For my uses, I think this is the best unit available. My only complaint is that the Garmin Maps are Too Expensive, and I can’t load my National Geographic TOPO maps on the unit.

I purchased the GPSMap 60csx for a road trip from Dallas to Knoxville, as well as a 2 day hike in the Smoky Mountains. After doing some research, I also purchased Topo 2008, City Navigator, and the East National parks maps to go with it. My wife navigated while I drove and we found the software easy to use (after some practice) and helpful. We never had a problem with reception and were able to pick up good signals in hotels, on heavily wooded trails, and in the car. Battery life was awesome and we went 3 days on the same set (with default backlight settings, keeping it turned off on long segments of highway, and at night). I had considered buying the newer Colorado series, but chose the gpsmap 60csx after reading a lot of users say that the newer versions needed some work. My only caveat is that without the additional maps, I am not sure that it would have been as useful. As far as using it for backpacking, we spent two days in the Smokies and it worked great. It held up to rain (had it clipped to my should strap) and cold (30-45F) without a problem. Like I said before, we didn’t have to change the batteries for 3 days (camping and driving time). I would definitely recommend this product as long as you are okay buying the maps.
George Mitchell's Rating:
This is the my third handheld gps unit and without a doubt it’s the best I have used or seen on the market to date. I primarily use it for recording fishing spots and water-related waypoints. I also use it to download my many other personal POI files. I’m extremely pleased with the unit’s overall performance and would highly recommend it to anyone. On the con side, to fully take advantage of the unit’s extended features you must purchase additional expensive mapping software. It’s fast when acquiring-refreshing, accurate and reliable and integrates nicely with related Garmin Mapsource products.
